2011 "Enugu Day" Event
The Enugu Cultural Organization of Michigan held a maiden "Enugu Day" event on July 16, 2011 to raise funds to support many of its projects both here in Michigan but especially in Enugu, Nigeria.

The theme of the event revolved around the historial but unsong significance of the November 18, 1949 massacre of 21 coal miners by the British colonial police at the orders of F. S. Phillip, a senior superintendent. Fifty-five others were wounded in that attack which attempted to "break their ranks as they embarked on an industrial action to press for living wages and improved conditions of service." In recalling this epochal event which ultimately was catalylic for Nigeria's drive for independence -- emboldening the likes of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe "Zik of Africa", Dr. Michael Okpara and other nationalists to demand for Nigeria's emancipation from Britain-- ECOMI opted to make a bold statement about a part of Nigeria's history that has often been overlooked.
